Attending Campus Events

The campus event I attended was the VT vs. Duke football game. It was a lovely October afternoon in Lane stadium as Tech was ready for a victory. The game day atmosphere was there: everyone jumped to enter sandman, shook keys during a key play and ferociously cheered for our team. We were behind by a touchdown after the first quarter, but fought hard to tie it up with a minute left in the game. I remember the great tension and prayers being said in the overtimes, everyone clutching each other hoping for a victory. This game was riveting throughout all 4 overtimes! I even got thrown in the air after a touchdown by some people I hardly knew! But I did know them, they were fellow Hokies. Unfortunately, the Hokies ending up loosing to the Blue Devils with a 45-43 final; however I found this game to be one of my greatest experiences at Tech so far.

So what? What relevance does the attendance of this campus event with hundreds of other students play in my life. Why is this event important to me? I did not attend this game by myself, but with some of my new close friends :) I even made some new friends with the people that threw me up in the air that day (haha). This is a memory we will share and as we grow old we can continue to tell the story, elaborating how we almost won that game. But the winning wasn't what mattered, it was the great experience we had cheering on our school and the excitement that came from such a close, well played match.

Now What? Well, now I plan to attend many more Virginia Tech football game to come. Being a active participant in the school community, even in this small engaging way gives me a sense of belonging as I am surrounding by those who also have the similar feeling. All of cheering for our team, all the way through the overtimes, close calls, tough losses, and spectacular victories.
